My home office
S o, full disclosure; I’m a bit of a nerd. I love books, music, art, baking, comics, Sherlock Holmes and old stuff. By ‘old stuff’ I mean antique books and swords…big gold frames and top hats…skulls in bell jars and corbels. When my office needed to be ripped apart from floor to ceiling and more or less rebuilt, it was never an option to not decorate it in full Victorian splendour.
When you work from home, you need a nice spot to plant your buttocks every morning. Even when you enjoy your job, sitting in the same room for hours on end can be difficult, especially when you have the complete freedom to go and wander off. So, having a room that is comfortable and full of phantasmagorical esoterica* is actually quite important.
I spent hours scrolling through Pinterest, online marketplaces and antique stores. I managed to find a decent captain’s desk, a couple of leather chairs, a writing desk/bureau, a huge gold-framed mirror, a fair amount of old books (dating as far back as the late 1600s) and my kids bought me a deerstalker and bowler hat for the hat stand. It’s not finished and probably never will be but it’s an amazing space to work in.
*’phantasmagoria’ is my favourite word ever…I’ve been looking for a good excuse to use it on this blog. Using it before the word ‘esoterica’ is the icing on the cake.
