“to know what you’re going to draw, you have to begin drawing”
– Pablo Picasso
When we create an animated marketing video for a client, there’s sometimes a fairly strict process in place, especially when there’s a close deadline. Because of legal teams, MDs, compliance offices etc. it can take a lengthy amount of time for us to get the script and visuals approved. We write the content and then it’s passed along a chain to be picked apart, altered and eventually approved. It’s unavoidable in most cases. So, with a tight deadline, it’s best to avoid going through the chain of approval more times than is absolutely necessary otherwise it can mean delays. The problem this renders is that we become tied into what we write in pre-production.
“Writing a novel is like driving a car at night…you can only see as far as the headlights…but you can make the whole trip that way.”
– E.L. Doctorow
Where possible, the absolute best way for us to work is to have the freedom to tweak and make changes throughout production. When I get to see how something looks – in it’s finished state – I can see what works and if something different will work even better. The Doctorow quote above points out how sometimes you need to start the creative journey before you know what the best direction to take really is or at least what the next best step will be. We never go into a project without an idea and a detailed plan but the freedom to take an alternative route if we hit a roadblock is invaluable. If a client can afford us the luxury, it always pays off.
