Curious conversations from the world of animation

I listen to an animation podcast called Animalators. The show’s host, Zac Dixon interviews different people from the animation industry every other week. Guests create an animated loop of a particular animal of their choosing and at the end of the show Zac asks them three questions.

Since the chances of us being on the show are pretty slim, I thought it’d be fun to animate an animal and answer the three questions anyway.

‘YOUR CHOSEN ANIMAL’

I picked a Moose for two reasons… One is that I had already rigged a Moose character for a side project I’m working on and two, because I’ve always found them fascinatingly odd.

‘WHO IS YOUR DREAM CLIENT?’

That’s an easy one… Marvel. Without a doubt. I’m a huge Marvel nerd, obsessively watching the movies through over and over and reading the graphic novels. I’d love to create some animated GIFs or shorts for their social media channels or something along those lines.

I’d go insane if I ever got to animate the closing credits on one of the MCU movies. As great as the dramatic 3D credits scenes were for movies like Avengers: Age of Ultron or Doctor Strange, the Spider-Man Homecoming credits were by far my favourite and gave a ton of different animators the opportunity to work on short pieces. That would have been a dream project.

‘WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ANIMATED FILM?’

Again, an easy one. The Iron Giant. It’s about as close as you can get to the perfect animated film. My kids love it too and we must have watched it a hundred times. It’s definitely a comfort movie for the family but from an animator’s perspective, it’s near perfect.

‘WHAT DO YOUR LOVED ONES THINK YOU DO FOR A LIVING?’

My wife works with me so she’s in the know. My kids just imagine I make boring cartoons. My father never really got his head around what we do and my mother would tell people I make websites. I think my siblings have a decent idea, sort of. The comic strip below more or less sums it up.
